When we specify a bill of materials each of the components could add to the weight of the product. While all of the required data, like the net weight of each component, is available in Exact for Manufacturing, it proved difficult to combine it into a total net weight for each product. A new enhancement makes it easy to calculate weight.
Reducing the dependency on Excel
Many manufacturers depend on Excel to manage the bill of materials (BOM). The most typical purpose of a BOM is to list the components of a product and their relative quantities. Next in usage is to support product costing, by adding up component cost with add value items like labor, overheads and outsourced work. Manufacturing solutions are usually well designed to cover these use cases. Sometimes BOMs are used to calculate other facts needed in the manufacturing or logistics process, like the weight, volume or area of the product. Several of our customers indicated that weight calculation is a need. By solving this need they would be able to eliminate the use of Excel for BOM management.
Net weight calculation in the BOM
The net weight calculation is an extension of the international transport data functionality released in 2014 for wholesale distribution and manufacturing (advanced editions and higher). The net weight calculation in the BOM can be switched on and off in the settings (default is off), and the related fields in the BOM are only visible if they are selected in the customize option of the BOM materials screen. The net weights of the components are shown in the material lines of the BOM version:

The calculated net weight of the product may be used to update the net weight of the manufactured item. This is similar to updating cost prices: Since each BOM version could have a different calculated weight we have a choice in principle to choose a version and update the item master with that weight:
