Flexible CSV/Excel import

Written by Michiel Dorjee on . Posted in Exact Online

Often Exact Online has to be linked to other sources, such as other software applications. A commonly used method is by importing text based files (CSV) or Excel files. For those relying on this, it is good to know that Exact Online does not work with fixed file formats. Instead it has a flexible import tool capable of handling almost every file.

Topics overview
On a single page all supported entities for import and/or export are displayed, including a link to the schema.

In the import schema is described which fields are supported for that entity, and the type and length of its value. Also mandatory fields are indicated, files lacking a mandatory field cannot be imported.

The import is capable of handling Excel files formatted as Excel 97-2003 or Text based files with any kind of separator (tab, comma, or a custom character). The importing process is handled via a wizard. This wizard will guide you step-by-step through the import process. After selecting the format of the file and whether it has a header (first row contains column names), the data fields of the file need to be mapped to the appropriate fields in Exact Online. For assistance the header (if available) and the first 5 rows of the import file are displayed.

At the end of the wizard, all selections made can be saved as a template, so the next time you import a similar file you don’t have to go through all the steps again.
