Integration with Exact: ELIS – Where are we now?

Written by Michiel van Rooijen on . Posted in Exact Globe, Exact Synergy

As announced earlier ELIS is currently in controlled release.

ELIS is a new technical framework for the integration between Exact Globe Next and Exact Synergy Enterprise and supports solutions that exchange data between these two products and possible third-party solutions.

Via an included control center you can centrally install, activate and manage these solutions (such as Exact Integration, CMDM, Shop Floor Control, Word Merge, Exchange Integration). This all is possible including central and pro-active logging which means that you can manage all integrations from one central location and send them again if errors occur. ELIS even offers the possibility to receive a notification by e-mail our in your workflow, so you can take action immediately.

Also partners are enabled to base integration solutions on this framework to benefit from the built-in functionality and central manageability.

Based on the positive results of the controlled release phase so far, we expect that ELIS including the solutions Exact Integration, Shop Floor Control and Word Merge, will be generally available by the end of this month.

For people who can’t wait it’s still possible to sign up for the controlled release program. This can be done by sending an e-mail to productreadiness@exact.com.

Please refer to the Fact Sheet for more information about the controlled release program.

For more information about ELIS, please see the start page: Getting started with Exact Lightweight Integration Server (ELIS).

Support for Internet Explorer 8 will be discontinued

Written by Michiel van Rooijen on . Posted in Exact Globe

Microsoft ends the support for Internet Explorer 8 in January 2015. This may have implications for your Exact software.

In order to work with Exact Globe Next and Exact Synergy Enterprise, Microsoft products are required. Exact follows the Microsoft support lifecycle policy with respect to these products’ system requirements. As a result the support of Internet Explorer 8 will be discontinued as of product update 254 of Exact Synergy Enterprise. This is also applicable to the Exact products that use Exact Synergy Enterprise, such as B2B E-Commerce portal.

Exact advises you to timely switch to a newer version of Internet Explorer or one of the other supported browsers, so you can continue to use the latest product updates of Exact Synergy Enterprise in the future.

Before you perform an update, it is of the utmost importance to read this information.

Check whether Exact Globe Next with extended functionality is added to your license
First, it is important to check whether you use Exact Globe Next with extended functionality, or if this is added to your license.

Via [Help, Over], at tab ‘License’, or via [E, About], link ‘License’, link ‘more details’ you need to check whether the module SE0101N – Exact Globe Next with extended functionality is added to your license.

From 12-12-2014 it is not possible anymore to perform an update for Exact Globe Next with extended functionality, when you use Windows XP or Windows Server 2003. This is
regardless of the current Product update you are using.

System requirements
For Exact Globe Next with extended functionality different system requirements apply. Regardless of the Product Update you are using, you need to meet Exact Globe Next with extended functionality’s System requirements for Product Update 409 in section ‘Exact Globe Next with extended functionality’.

If Exact Globe Next with extended functionality is not added to your license, then you can disregard this message.

Change regarding the product updates that are available for download

Written by Michiel van Rooijen on . Posted in Exact Globe, Exact Synergy

When performing an update of Exact Globe Next and Exact Synergy Enterprise you have the possibility to select the product update you want to install.

The availability of the older product updates causes confusion among customers our who perform an update. Because there is little demand for the old product updates and they are not up-to-date in terms of legislation and regulations, in line with our Terms and Conditions as of now only the last five product updates are available for download.

At the moment the following product updates are available for Exact Globe Next: 404, 405, 406, 407 and 408. For Exact Synergy Enterprise the following product updates are available 249, 250, 251, 252 and 253.

Older product updates are no longer available for download, but are available on request. For more information about requesting an older product update, see this document on our customer portal.

How do you experience our PowerPivot reports?

Written by Bob Heinen on . Posted in Exact Globe

In one of my previous blog posts I reported that we have chosen PowerPivot, a free add-on for Microsoft Excel 2010, to offer you free reports to keep track on your day-to-day business progress. PowerPivot is not available as a free add-on for MS Excel 2013. In that version it is only available in the licence Office Professional Plus.

In the last period of 2013 we have created views on important tables in Exact Globe Next. Based on these views we have built Manufacturing, Purchase, Revenue and Stock reports.  You can easily customize the reports, for instance to align them with your own needs, or build completely new ones.

As of product update 407 of Exact Globe Next, the latest commercial release, the views are automatically executed when the product update is installed. In document 25.623.801 (for customers, in Dutch) a lot of details can be found like installation instructions, setup database connection and reports.

If you already use PowerPivot reports or have built your own based on Exact Globe Next views, I am very curious on your experience. Would you please be so kind to share your experience with us by leaving your reply in the comment box below this article? It is highly appreciated.

Steps to make your reports more dynamic

Written by Bob Heinen on . Posted in Exact Globe, Exact Synergy

Wouldn’t it be great to make your reports more dynamic? An “outstanding items” report which retrieves and shows you this information based on the selected company.  Selecting another company triggers the report to dynamically retrieve this information from a different data source and show it to you. How great is that?! This all can be achieved with a report which uses a Dynamic Data Source (DDS). In this blog post I will explain how SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS) reports with DDS are supported in Exact Synergy Enterprise via the SSRS Integration.

All the Exact Globe Next Dashboards (SSRS reports) are making use of the DDS functionality. To view these Dashboards you don’t necessarily need Exact Globe Next with extended functionality. Exact Synergy Enterprise with Exact Globe Next is sufficient to enjoy the dynamic power of these Dashboards. You can also view them directly on the Report Server when you only have Exact Globe Next and SSRS installed.

In Exact Synergy Enterprise you can maintain divisions. Each division represents a company. The back office data, e.g. financial transactions, for the company is stored in a database on a server. On the division card you can maintain these values. They are stored in the fields “Database: IP Address (Server)” and “Database: Name” in the “Back office” section.

Division card - Back office section

Now that we know where the “Back office” is located for each division (company) we can use it in our reports. The report requires two fixed named parameters (“Division” and “ConnectionString”).

DDS Report parameters

It also requires an embedded data source which uses the value of the “ConnectionString” parameter to connect to the correct data source (Back office: company).

Embedded Dynamic Data Source

The credentials for the embedded data source should be set to “Windows integrated security”.

Credentials Dynamic Data Source

The visibility of the “ConnectionString” Parameter should be set to “Hidden” so that the user can’t change it manually.

Hidden property for ConnectionString parameter

The default value of the “ConnectionString” Parameter is the same value as of the “Division” parameter. This is required in order to trigger the refresh data for the possible other report parameters. E.g. the default financial “Year” and “Period”.

Default value for ConnectionString parameter

In Exact Synergy Enterprise you can select a Division when you are viewing one of the Exact Globe Next Dashboards. The selected Company will be used when you are using Exact Globe Next ‘with extended functionality’ to view them.

The SSRS Integration will not send the value of the “Division” parameter to the Report Server for the Exact Globe Next Dashboards, but it will send the concatenated value. E.g. “Data Source=nl000dem01;Initial Catalog=MacBeanGLB”. The same value will be copied by the Report Server to the “ConnectionString” parameter so that a successful data source connection can be made to the selected Division/Company and data for the report and possible other report parameters can be retrieved.

When you want to view one of the Exact Globe Next Dashboards directly on the Report Server, you just need to provide the concatenated value for the “ConnectionString” parameter via the “Division” parameter.

DDS Report

Of course the Exact Globe Next Dashboards can be adjusted so that user can enter the same value as in Exact Synergy Enterprise for the “Division” parameter instead of the required concatenated value for the “ConnectionString” parameter.

With the above steps you can create your own dynamic SSRS reports.
Now you can view the same report and select from which company you want to see financial information e.g. outstanding items: that’s a powerful and dynamic feature!

Enjoy and don’t hesitate to leave a reply.

Remember that any SSRS report with the above requirements will be recognized by the SSRS Integration in Exact Synergy Enterprise as a report with DDS. Thus there won’t be a data source for you to configure in the tab ‘Data source’ on maintenance page for a SSRS report with DDS. Because there are no credentials stored for the DDS it will use the credentials stored in the SSRS Integration settings. Thus the user configured in the SSRS Integration setting should be able to read the data in the “Back office”; this user should have at least the db_reader role. Similar as for the user (credentials) which you use when creating a new data source. Otherwise the SSRS report with DDS can not retrieve the required data.
